While sitting on the lift this past week I was thinking of all the ski areas I have been and all of the different things they have to offer.
I ski NY because this is where I grew up, on Belleayre Mountain in the Catskills. But I have also spent many days at different ski areas while I was racing, growing up. My family spent countless weekends away at different resorts and ski areas for racing. What I didn’t know then, is that these resorts are for more than racing. My world just revolved around the race – the prep the night before, the fun afterwards and the long ride home. One area I always loved going to was West Mountain. The racing was always fun and exciting, and they always had a great race course.
Spending the Holidays at areas such as Peak n Peak, Holiday Valley, Whiteface and Greek Peak are traditional for some families. The resorts offer pools and water parks, tubing and of course the slopes. These are great family places with lots to offer for the whole family. We spent our holidays every year at race camp at Belleayre when I was training or coaching. Although we didn’t have a water park for the after ski hours, we did enjoy tubing in Plattekill.
Day trips are big for the Catskills Mountains. With the easy commute from NYC many city people spend their Saturday’s or Sunday’s in the Catskills at one of the many ski areas. They might spend the day like a local at Plattekill Mountain. Explore the new Hunter North at Hunter Mountain or Ski Windham Mountain and then walk around the town later. Or spend the day at Belleayre Mountain on the Catskill Thunder. Wherever you go, the views of the Catskills will always be magnificent.
Whether you are a novice skier or an expert shredder, NY mountains have terrain for everyone. Just hop in the car and let the mountains call you to your next adventure. Whether it be a day trip, or a weekend getaway it’s all about the memories…
I’ll ski ya on the slopes!
